Xavi pens new deal until June 2016.

Xavi Hernández will remain at Barcelona until 30th June 2016.

The midfielder signed a contract extension at the club's offices at Camp Nou this afternoon. Xavi was joined by club President Sandro Rosell, vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu and Technical Director of Professional Football, Andoni Zubizarreta.



The Terrassa-born playmaker, who turned 33 on Friday, adds an extra two years onto his previous arrangement with Barça which was due to end in June 2014. Xavi follows Carles Puyol who also penned a new deal last week to keep him at the club until 2016.

New Barca deal for Messi

Lionel Messi has agreed a new contract to stay at Barcelona until 2018, while Carles Puyol and Xavi have also agreed new deals until 2016.



Messi's current deal runs until June 2016 and the new agreement will keep him at the Nou Camp beyond his 31st birthday.



The forward has enjoyed an extraordinary year, even by his own remarkable standards, netting his 89th and 90th goals of 2012 at the weekend.



The 25-year-old had already surpassed Gerd Muller's 40-year-old record of 85 goals in a calendar year.



He is also in contention to claim a fourth successive FIFA Ballon d'Or crown, being named on a three-man shortlist alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and team-mate Andres Iniesta.

Xavi breaks Euro passing record

The Spain midfielder accrued 136 passes during La Roja's 4-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, surpassing Ronald Koeman's haul for the Netherlands.

Spain midfielder Xavi has broken the record for the most passes attempted and completed in a European Championship game during the 4-0 win over Republic of Ireland.

The midfield maestro attempted 136 passes on Thursday and completed 127 of them. The previous record of 117 attempted passes had been held by Netherlands legend Ronald Koeman, who accrued that total during the 1992 tournament in a clash against Denmark.



Spain also eclipsed another European Championship mark by attempting 860 passes against the Boys in Green.





La Roja brushed Giovanni Trapattoni's men aside with ease on Thursday, running out 4-0 winners and boasting 78 per cent possession.



They now top Group C alongside Croatia, who they face in the final round of group matches on Monday.
