ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER TRAGEDY: Curiously, gun control capital of the U.S. is also its murder capital

It's enough to make you sick. No matter how badly their gun-control policies fail, no matter how many people die, Democrats will keep pushing and pushing and pushing their dictatorial agenda.

Yesterday a talented 15-year old -- an Honor Roll student who had performed in the presidential inauguration ceremony earlier this month -- was shot and killed in the Chicago neighborhood just blocks from her home. And, once again, Chicago is on track to suffer more than 500 murders this year.

CBS 2’s Mike Parker reports the victim, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, was taking shelter from the rain with a group of 10 to 12 teenagers under a canopy in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park on the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue around 2:30 p.m., when someone jumped a fence, ran up to them, and opened fire.

...Just days before, Hadiya performed with her high school band at President Obama’s inauguration.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel called Hadiya’s mother, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, to try to offer a measure of comfort...

...CBS 2′s Suzanne Le Mignot reports the park where Hadiya was shot is just blocks from King College Prep High School — where she was an honor student, volleyball player, and majorette with the school band.

...Police said Hadiya had no gang affiliation and likely wasn’t the intended target. Several of the teens with her at the time, however, were believed to be gang members.

According to the Stuffington Roast, Chicago -- which has the strictest gun control laws in the country -- is far more dangerous than Afghanistan.

"If only one child can be saved"?

And Rahm Emanuel, who serves as mayor of the most violent city in America, wants to tell the rest of America about the importance of banning guns?

I've got an idea, Rahm: why don't you drink a big tall glass of Shut-Up Juice and start letting law-abiding citizens carry weapons? And then watch your crime rates go down as the gang-bangers your "Great Society" pals have spawned will have no earthly idea who's packing heat.

As it stands in Murder-town, only criminals bent on violence have guns while law-abiding citizens are reduced to cowering in fear or begging for their lives.

That's why concealed carry laws have been proven to reduce gun violence, over and over and over again, in city after city and state after state. Try and read a book for a change, you statist kook, before you dare tell us how to live our lives. Schmuck.

TODAY'S REMINDER: Relying on an unelected, unaccountable, centralized government bureaucracy

Let's put it this way. I have certain, uhm, reservations about big government.

Remember to try the roast beef. I'll be here all week.

The sad truth about Social Security

Please hide this particular article from any young hopenchangers who suffer from the delusion that Social Security will be around when they're ready to retire.

Social security is not earned retirement income, an entitlement nor a benefit.

Many people believe that Social Security is an “earned right.” That is, they think that because they have paid Social Security taxes, they are entitled to receive Social Security benefits. The government encourages that belief by referring to Social Security taxes as “contributions,” as in the Federal Insurance Contribution Act...

...However, in the 1960 case of Fleming v. Nestor, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that workers have no legally binding contractual rights to their Social Security benefits, and that those benefits can be cut or even eliminated at any time.

Nestor sued, claiming that because he had paid Social Security taxes, he had a right to Social Security benefits.

The Supreme Court disagreed, saying “To engraft upon the Social Security system a concept of ‘accrued property rights’ would deprive it of the flexibility and boldness in adjustment to ever changing conditions which it demands.” The Court went on to say, “It is apparent that the non-contractual interest of an employee covered by the [Social Security] Act cannot be soundly analogized to that of the holder of an annuity, whose right to benefits is bottomed on his contractual premium payments.”

The Court’s decision was not surprising. In an earlier case, Helvering v. Davis (1937), the Court had ruled that Social Security was not a contributory insurance program, saying, “The proceeds of both the employee and employer taxes are to be paid into the Treasury like any other internal revenue generally, and are not earmarked in any way.”

In other words, Social Security is not an insurance program at all. It is simply a payroll tax on one side and a welfare program on the other. Your Social Security benefits are always subject to the whim of 535 politicians in Washington. Congress has cut Social Security benefits in the past and is likely to do so in the future...

Unfortunately for the drones (i.e., the Obama Cultists), the math always defeats the political rhetoric. Always. And the fuse on the fiscal time-bomb is fizzling away, without any of our leaders making the slightest effort to douse it.

NICE JOB, BLOOMBERG: NYC welfare funds being spent in strip clubs, porn joints, liquor stores...

...to name but a few. And I refer, of course, to the sanctimonious schmuck of a mayor and not the news service.

A database of 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from January 2011 to July 2012, obtained by The Post through a Freedom of Information request, showed welfare recipients using their EBT cards to make dozens of cash withdrawals at ATMs inside Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn; the Blue Door Video porn shop in the East Village; The Anchor, a sleek SoHo lounge; the Patriot Saloon in TriBeCa; and Drinks Galore, a liquor distributor in The Bronx...
...One EBT machine is stationed inside Club Eleven, an infamous Hunts Point jiggle joint known as much for its violent history as its girls in pink thongs.

...Club Heat, another Bronx strip club that dispenses EBT cash, is also no stranger to violence. A 33-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head outside the club in December 2011.

Critics blasted the government for turning a blind eye to welfare’s sleazy money.

Yes, Mayor Bloomberg wants to regulate the size of soda cups, the use of salt and -- of course -- the ability of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves by carrying concealed weapons.

In the mean time, his city and state treasuries -- not exactly overflowing with cash at the moment -- are being looted while Bloomberg dreams up more failed, totalitarian plans.

SHOCK: New York Corner Stores Appear to be Facilitating Rampant Abuse of EBT Welfare Benefits

But there's nothing to cut!

Most people run to the corner bodega for a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread, but some welfare recipients are plunking down $500 at a time in suspicious transactions... Welfare users are only allowed to use their Electronic Benefit Transfer cards to buy food, yet they are rung up like fat cats in tiny stores in The Bronx and Brooklyn where the priciest item is usually an $8 pound of ham.

Earlier this year, an owner and a cashier at Glenwood Food Corp. in Canarsie, Brooklyn, were arrested for ringing up bogus transactions... A federal sting found the bodega was recording phony purchases on EBT cards, handing customers about 70 percent of the amount in cash — and pocketing the rest. Goods were rarely exchanged in the scam, which defrauded taxpayers out of $985,000 in two years...

Sheridan Mini Mart in Morrisania, The Bronx, rang up single sales of $543.40 and $473.50 on June 4, 2012, alone. That’s a lot of bread for a store where the most expensive item is an $11.99 jug of cooking oil... At Tremont’s Palenque Supermarket Corp., ETB where the priciest product is an $18.99 gallon of olive oil, transactions reached as high as $400 last year... Desi Grocery, a tiny East New York store now known as Anchor Grocery, racked up a $585 sale and several $400 sales through June 2012...

Robert Rector of The Heritage Foundation called the USDA’s anti-fraud procedures “a joke... “There’s virtually no oversight or effort from the USDA to stop this at all,” Rector said. “A store gets disqualified from the program and miraculously it’s back in business in the next two weeks with a new name on the front door.”

How many hundreds of billions of dollars in our money are "redistributed" through fraudulent Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and food stamp transactions?

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind. The answer is blowing in the wind.

CHART: America's Disappearing Fathers

Truly tragic:

In every state, the portion of families where children have two parents, rather than one, has dropped significantly over the past decade. Even as the country added 160,000 families with children, the number of two-parent households decreased by 1.2 million. Fifteen million U.S. children, or 1 in 3, live without a father, and nearly 5 million live without a mother. In 1960, just 11 percent of American children lived in homes without fathers...
The spiral continues each year. Married couples with children have an average income of $80,000, compared with $24,000 for single mothers.
“We have one class that thinks marriage and fatherhood is important, and another which doesn’t, and it’s causing that gap, income inequality, to get wider,”

...Though income is the primary predictor, the lack of live-in fathers also is overwhelmingly a black problem, regardless of poverty status, census data show. Among blacks, nearly 5 million children, or 54 percent, live with only their mother...

[One black father] is quick to blame the absence of fathers to deaths or incarcerations, though women point out that many absent fathers live around the corner...

The inconvenient truth? The "War on Poverty" and the Left's failed welfare state policies have decimated the two-parent family and ruined the lives of millions.

Of that, there can be no debate.

A Merry Dependent Christmas to You and Yours

An Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card resembles a typical credit or debit card. The EBT system is used to deliver "public assistance benefits", like the old food stamp program. It's ostensibly designed to simplify the delivery of benefits and reduce the stigma associated with using food stamps, but it is rife with fraud and abuse.

In Massachusetts, for example, nearly 90 percent of EBT benefits are withdrawn as cash.

Does it make any difference for the state to ban the use of EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards at tattoo parlors, strip joints or package stores if beneficiaries can use them to get cash from an ATM?

What difference does any kind of control on the use of the actual cards make if the benefit can accessed in cash?

...According to that EBT Commission report, 85% of EBT benefits, or $77 Million in a three month period between October and Dec. 2011, were translated into cash at ATMs.

So what difference does a ban on EBT cards at liquor stores, strip clubs and nail salons make if you can withdraw benefits in the form of cash? If the latest info on Twitter is any indication, none.

But, remember Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer: even though the entire system is collapsing, there's nothing to cut.

MEANWHILE, in the nation's safest city...

Chicago, Illinois must be the safest city in the U.S. because: (a) it has the most draconian gun restrictions; and (b) it resides in the state with the strictest firearm regulations in the country.

And how's that working out for them?

10 shot, including 4 teens, Friday afternoon and night

Shootings across the city Friday afternoon and night wounded at least ten people, according to Chicago police, including four teens in three separate South and West side attacks.

Someone shot two boys, both 16, about 5:11 p.m. Friday afternoon in the 1700 block of East 71st Place in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side. Both were taken to Comer Children's Hospital in stable condition with gunshot wounds to their legs.

Two other teens were wounded Friday afternoon -- a 15-year-old near North Avenue and Lorel Avenue in the Austin neighborhood and a 16-year-old near Western Avenue and Taylor Street in the Lawndale neighborhood...

How much of the violence in Chicago that occurs each night is authored by kids without fathers?

That's the question we should be asking. Only that question won't be asked and it won't be answered, because it indicts the Democrat Party's failed policies on a monumental scale.

How many dead, crippled and imprisoned inner-city youths has "Great Society" left in its wake? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands? Millions?

How many have died thanks to "the War on Drugs", "the War on Guns", and "the War on Poverty"? And how many more must die before we reverse course on the Democrats' failed welfare state policies and their catastrophic impact on the two-parent family?

FOOD STAMP ABUSE: They're not even pretending any more

From the American tradition of rugged independence to a culture of dependency:

I took this photo of the self-checkout payment screen at a Hen House grocery store in Overland Park, KS. Cash benefits for food stamps. And why not? This is America. Forward!

As a high school student and humble grocery store carryout (back in the 80's), it was common to watch someone pay for their government-approved items like milk and diapers with their food stamps and then, in a separate transaction, pay for their beer and cigarettes with their cash. Even as a kid I knew this was wrong. If you have money for booze then you shouldn't be asking your neighbors to pay your grocery bill.

Today, the dependency class can't even be bothered to fake it. We'll just give them the cash.

It's probably for the best though. They'll need that cash on their welfare-funded Hawaiian vacations. Oh, you can't afford one of those? Quit being so selfish and get back to work. 47.7 million food stamp recipients are counting on you and they're not going to just feed themselves, you know.

Since taking office, Obama has increased the number of Americans on food stamps and in poverty by a mind-boggling 50 percent.

The abuse of food stamps is so widespread that even the USDA now admits it has no idea what people are buying with them.

A PUBLIC SERVICE MESSAGE FOR AMERICA'S YOUTH: Here's How You're Being Ripped Off

Ever seen these numbers on your pay stub? The numbers I've highlighted?

That money is being taken from you -- or, more properly, it's being stolen from you -- to fund a myth. A mirage.

You're never going to see a dime of that "Social Security Retirement Insurance" you're paying for.

You'll never a see a nickel of that "Medicare Health Care Insurance" either.

That money is being taken from your pay -- your livelihood -- to fund a system that will be bankrupt in less than a dozen years.

Oh, and it's not me saying that: Medicare’s own actuary, Richard Foster, is. Social Security is in a similar situation, according to Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, who serves as the system's senior trustee.

Suffice it to say that these systems will actually go broke far sooner than anyone's really admitting because the economy remains poor and appears to be slowing down even further.

My public service message is this: this money is being taken from your pay in exchange for a promise that will be broken in just a few years. You'll never see that money again. And it is the government -- the government, not "the rich", not the Koch brothers, not the oil companies -- that is ripping you off.

It is the government, not corporations, spending untold billions on "green energy" scams like Solyndra. It is the government, not "the rich", slathering EBT-welfare cards around like confetti. And it is the government, not "the Tea Party", that is promoting illegal immigration and offering huge financial benefits to those in the country illegally. All with your money.

Unless you like being ripped off every week, I'd recommend you get involved in returning government to its rightful and proper role, which includes having Washington spend within its means -- like all of us must do to survive.

After all, it's your money.

GRIM MILESTONE: Welfare Spending Per Household Surpasses the Median American's Income

Trillions of dollars have been laundered through the welfare bureaucracy since the inception of "Great Society". And what do we have to show for it?

Rampant fraud and increased poverty:

'Welfare Spending Equates to $168 Per Day for Every Household in Poverty'

The amount of money spent on welfare programs equals, when converted to cash payments, about "$168 per day for every household in poverty"...

...welfare spending per day per household in poverty is $168, which is higher than the $137 median income per day. When broken down per hour, welfare spending per hour per household in poverty is $30.60, which is higher than the $25.03 median income per hour.

History teaches us -- or at least, the intelligent among us, which rules out Democrats -- that collectivism spreads misery.

We are headed for fiscal collapse -- and the welfare state keeps growing like a cancer, incentivizing sloth, formalizing a culture of dependency, and killing self-sufficiency.

Liberty, I am sad to say, is on the wane.

THE END: Three Must-See Charts

Icecap Asset Management, via (who else?) Tyler Durden:

...Since WWII, the Americans, Japanese, British and Europeans have spent way more money than they owned. But that was okay because the money they borrowed wouldn’t have to be repaid until some far away day in the future.

Unfortunately the future has now arrived and today, the next generations of Americans, Japanese, British and Europeans have all plunged into a deathly debt spiral... Today it is no coincidence that the Americans, Japanese, British and Europeans have all set interest rates as close to 0% as possible. Also today, it is no coincidence that the Americans, Japanese, British and Europeans are all printing money...

...The crash of 2008 wasn’t simply due to an overheated American housing market – this was just the one of many final straws. In fact, those dark days of just a few short years ago were the culmination of years of too much spending and too much borrowing, and then trying to sweep these stresses under a money printing rug to be forgotten...

...The excesses of today were not accumulated over a standard 3-5 year business cycle, but rather the excesses accumulated over 60 years of fortuitous, kicking-the-can-down-the-road policies by governments and central bankers...

...Now, the “save the day” strategy of cutting interest rates can work for a really long time – well, at least until there are no more interest rates left to cut. Unfortunately – with close to 0% rates everywhere, the World has reached that day.

In addition to cutting interest rates, Keynesian economics also believes that to really save the day, governments should combine cutting interest rates with deficit spending... The belief is that when the economy slumps, lower interest rates will encourage private investors to borrow, hire and spend again, but in the meantime governments should fill this spending lull by building new bridges, roads and sidewalks...

...Keynesians want you to believe that although cutting interest rates, running deficits and excessively borrowing didn’t exactly work out as planned – this last great hope of money printing should work.

We of course have our doubts. Like Friedrich Hayek, we believe the only way for the global economy to recover is for governments to dramatically reduce their interference in private markets. As long as central banks and governments continue to influence interest rates, lending, and employment - private capital will not return.

Instead of living in a World where economic success is rewarded, we now see a wave of new Western World governments who support taxing success to reward those who failed...

...the one point we hear no one pondering aloud is exactly what happens the moment the Americans decide (or are forced) to stop printing money.

...For those who don’t quite understand the effects of money printing, you just have to know that during the last year the Americas had a $1 trillion deficit – meaning the government spent $1 trillion more than what they collected in taxes. In a normal World, people and countries have to borrow the $1 trillion to pay the bills, but not the Americans.

Only in America does money grow on trees. And, in this case of the $1 trillion that was needed to fund the deficit, Ben Bernanke and the US Federal Reserve will print about $480 billion...

...The real concern and balancing act facing Mr. Bernanke and his Keynesian team is what happens to private capital the moment it is announced that money printing will stop, or if over night interest rates were to rise.

At that moment, make believe becomes real believe as private capital once again gets to play in the real World. And in the real World, private capital will demand to be paid given the amount of real risk that is present.

Two things will happen. For starters some of the private capital will simply leave to find a new home in other countries or markets. In addition, the price of money (ie. interest rates) will increase but not just for US government treasuries and bonds – but across the entire credit spectrum...

...To understand the importance of this concept, you just need to know that currently the average interest rate paid by the Americans on their debt is 2.56%. This equals $417 billion/year. If long-term rates were to double to 5%, the cost of funding this mess rises to $834 billion or 6% of GDP...

...the ill-fated exercise of following Keynesian economics to kick the can down the road will continue once again. The World has already seen the failure of the Keynesian approach of continuous interest rate cutting, deficit spending and tax cuts.

The bad news is that the money printing option embraced today will not create a different outcome.

WELFARE'S FAILURE AND THE SOLUTION: A Phenomenal Presentation from the State of Pennsylvania

Tyler Durden -- via "When Work Is Punished: The Tragedy Of America's Welfare State" -- points us to an exceptional presentation by Gary Alexander, the Secretary of Public Welfare for the State of Pennsylvania. Read the whole thing.

Promoting innovation and competition between the states? Saving money for the federal government? Makes perfect sense, as long as you're not a radical Leftist.

Which is why the Democrat Party will ignore these and all other reforms. They're not trying to fix big government -- they're trying to expand big government.

Which is why the entire system is headed for collapse.

FREE DEMOCRAT PLANTATION CARDS FOR EVERYONE: You may know them as "EBT"

Free food stamps -- eh, I mean, EBT Cards -- for everyone!

As economist Milton Friedman observed, "You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state."

At least not without a societal collapse, that is.

SURELY YOU JEST: Violent Crime Up 17 Percent in One Year Thanks to the Brilliant Leadership of Barack Obama

And don't call me Shirley. And please don't call Mr. Obama the "Food Stamp President", even though that's precisely what he is.

Violent crime in America rose 17 percent last year, a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics finds. In 2011, 5.8 million Americans age 12 older -- 22.5 of every 1,000 -- were victims of violent crime, up from 19.3 in 2010, [which] includes homicide, rape or sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated or simple assault. About 17.1 million more Americans were victims of property damage crimes, an increase of 11 percent.

Let me assure you that this increase was expected. And it will get worse.

Studies prove -- beyond a shadow of a doubt -- that making it easy to get food stamps and other forms of welfare increase the occurrence of children born out of wedlock. And kids born out of wedlock, irrespective of race, commit significantly more violent crimes than children born to two-parent families.

In a nutshell: the Democrats' multi-decade effort to make welfare checks easier and easier to get have destroyed opportunities for society's most vulnerable children. And the crime wave is only beginning, thanks to Barack Obama and the Democrat Party, who have made food stamps easier to get than a job.

IT'S ANOTHER OBAMA RECORD: The Number of Americans on Food Stamps Just Hit Another All-Time High

President Obama's plans for the future? Things are just swell. Let's stay the course.

Food stamps enrollment has hit a new record high. 46,681,833 million are now enrolled in the social welfare program, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, the federal department that runs the program.

..."[The] USDA has engaged in an aggressive outreach and promotional campaign to boost food stamp enrollment. Among these efforts are an ongoing partnership with the Mexican government to advertise food stamps to Mexican nationals, migrant workers, and non-citizen immigrants. Partly as a result of these efforts, the number of non-citizens on food stamps has quadrupled since 2001," explains the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee.

And the cost, the committee explains, is astronomical. "Total spending on food stamps is projected to reach nearly $800 billion over the next 10 years, with no fewer than 1 in 9 people on the program at any given time. Neither food stamp participation nor spending on the program are ever projected to return to pre-recession levels at any point in the next 10 years."

But don't worry, peons. Michelle Obama just said that "We are in the midst of a huge recovery!"

FEEDING AT THE TROUGH: Businesses Tied to Claire McCaskill's Husband Received $40 Million in Fed Subsidies

Please: try and contain your shock.

Businesses affiliated with the husband of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill have received almost $40 million in federal subsidies for low-income housing developments during her first five years in office, but McCaskill's campaign said Tuesday that none of that money made it into the family's personal bank accounts.

McCaskill's Republican challenger, Rep. Todd Akin, says the federal payments should be a cause for concern among voters. He's attempting to portray the Democratic senator's family as a prime beneficiary of government largesse.

"There is a conflict of interest and a breach of trust with the citizens of our state," Akin said in an interview with The Associated Press.

...The AP reviewed five years' worth of federal personal financial disclosure statements filed by McCaskill, which list more than 300 "affordable housing" businesses in which her husband, Joseph Shepard, had at least a partial ownership during the time she has been in office. At least one-third of those businesses also appear to be listed as recipients of federal payments in an online government database that tracks spending.

The firms affiliated with Shepard appear to have received about $39 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Housing Service or the Department of Housing and Urban Development between 2007 - when McCaskill took office - and the end of 2011. According to McCaskill's financial reports, Shepard earned an income of between about $400,000 and $2.6 million from those businesses in the years in which they received government payments...

So let me get this straight. During McCaskill's time in office, her husband received payments of between $400,000 and $2.6 million from the businesses subsidized in great part by her votes.

But "none of that money made it into the family's personal bank accounts".

That seems plausible, if you're a Democrat in the mold of Dodd, Frank, Rangel, Pelosi, Feinstein, Waters, Mollohan, etc. etc. etc.

At face value, these people appear so crooked you could open up wine bottles with 'em.

FINISHING WHAT HE STARTED: Scariest Ad Ever

Tell me whether you agree that this may be the most terrifying ad ever created:

1. THE SCARIEST AD EVER

2. FINISHING WHAT HE STARTED, FOOD STAMP EDITION

3. FINISHING WHAT HE STARTED, LAWLESSNESS EDITION

For those willing to examine the research, the "War on Poverty" has turned out to have been a $15 trillion failure. It has actually caused more misery, more poverty, and more violent crime than if we had never spent that money in the first place. And those trapped in the inner cities have been the hardest hit of all.
