Ben Arfa fancies French move

Hatem Ben Arfa has risked troubling Newcastle boss Alan Pardew by talking up his hopes of a future move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward is back in France recovering from a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for another month.

He insisted preserving Newcastle's Premier League status remained his priority but said a return to Ligue 1 with the club he supported as a boy would fulfill a "childhood dream".

"I am under contract with Newcastle and I'm fine," the former Marseille and Lyon player told Le Parisien.

"First, I must save my club. I only think of that. Help my team and my coach, with whom I get along great. We really want to fight for him.

"The fans are great too. Once we have saved the club, you never know. To sign for PSG would be a childhood dream. If there is a proposal, I will study it with interest.

"If there is a proposal. The 'if' is important. PSG still lives in my heart. Playing there would be a wonderful gift."

Newcastle languish two points above the drop zone after just two wins from their last 10 league games.

Newcastle finalised Debuchy deal

Newcastle United have completed the signing of French right back Mathieu Debuchy from Lille on a five-and-a-half year deal.

The defender was believed to be close to joining the Premier League side during the summer transfer window following a string of impressive performances during France's Euro 2012 campaign, only for the two clubs to be unable to agree a fee.

Debuchy was present during Newcastle's 2-1 defeat to Everton on Wednesday as he watched from the stands at St James' Park, and joins up with fellow France internationals Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye after completing the five-million-pound move.

"I hope I can bring something fresh to the team and help us get up to the highest possible position in the Premier League this season," Debuchy told the club's official website.

"I will give everything for this club."

Meanwhile, manager Alan Pardew admitted it was a 'huge relief' to secure the long-term target's signature.

"It's no secret we've been trailing him for some time now and to have reached this point fills me with great excitement and anticipation in respect of what he will be able to offer the team," said the Newcastle manager.

"At the same time it's a huge relief to actually have him with us now.

"He is an established top international player and it is a real coup for this club that we now have him at St James' Park.

"Mathieu will add real quality to our team, in terms of his ability, character and experience and I am sure he will quickly become a firm favourite among our fans too."

The right-back has 12 caps for his country so far, scoring one goal, whilst he won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France with Lille in 2011.

The France international is expected to feature in Newcastle's next Premier League fixture, against Norwich on January 12, however he will unavailable for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie away to Brighton.

Football Rich List 2011/12

We brings you the wealthiest people involved in British football - managers, players, chairmen, shareholders and board members in 2012:

1. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan £20bn - Manchester City (Last year £20bn, 1st)

According to accountants with abacuses, the £23m signing of Samir Nasri took Sheikh Mansour's spending on Manchester City into 10 figures – £1.003 billion, to be precise, breaking down into £210m to acquire the club, £433m on transfers and an aggregate wage bill of £360m. For that he's achieved third place, an FA Cup win and a first Champions League campaign: admission to football's top table.

The Sheikh won't be rooting down the back of the sofa for change. The brother of the ruler of the oil-rich Abu Dhabi, the biggest of the United Arab Emirates, he can afford to take a long view. His family fortune and that of Abu Dhabi as a state have been interlinked since oil was discovered in 1958, turning the nation of fishermen into a global financial powerhouse. The Abu Dhabi assets are reckoned to be nearly £400 billion.

Married to Sheikha Manal bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, daughter of Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Sheikh Mansour is also politically influential as a member of the federal cabinet in the United Arab Emirates and Minister of Presidential Affairs. His love of sport has already led him to become chairman of Al Jazeera Football Club and the Emirates Horse Racing Authority. With the hefty spending at City and the fact that oil prices are level pegging, we keep Mansour at £20 billion.

2. Alisher Usmanov £12.4bn -  Arsenal (Last year £8bn, 3rd)

Uzbek-Russian tycoon Usmanov's Red and White Securities has been buying shares in Arsenal and now has a 29.28% stake worth £235m. He says of his interest in the Gunners: "My love for Arsenal is like that of a man for a woman. It is not something you can sell." But nor can cash consummate the relationship: in April he lost the battle for majority control to Stan Kroenke, to whom Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith and the late Danny Fiszman decided to sell their shares to the American instead of Usmanov.

The son of a former state prosecutor in Tashkent, Usmanov became rich through steel and iron ore mines. He has a 45% stake in Metalloinvest, Russia's biggest iron ore miner, which is valued at up to £13 billion. Usmanov's more recent investments are in media, telecoms and banking. He has made a huge profit on an investment in the £32 billion Facebook social network site. Usmanov bought $800 million of stock in state-controlled Siberbank in 2009. He also owns a £48million mansion in north London, as well as Sutton Place, the Surrey Tudor manor house formerly owned by the world's one-time richest man, J Paul Getty. In September 2007, Usmanov splashed out £20m to buy the art collection of the late cellist Mstislav Rostropovich for a state museum.

With the recent stock market improvements, we raise Usmanov to £13 billion. But despite his large stake in Arsenal and his huge wealth, Usmanov is no nearer gaining control of the club from Stan Kroenke, the US billionaire who has over 66% of the shares.

3. Lakshmi Mittal £11.8bn - QPR (Last year £17bn, 2nd)

You can't always get what you want. Four years after buying into QPR, Mittal will be pleased to see the Hoops playing in the Premier League – but perhaps irked that the attention is on Malaysian majority owner Tony Fernandes, who beat Mittal to the 66% club stake formerly held by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone for a rumoured fee of around £35m.

Mittal retains his 33% stake and his son-in-law Amit Bhatia is the QPR vice-chairman. But steel is where Mittal has made his fortune as boss of the world's largest steel maker, ArcelorMittal. He has grown rich by acquiring and turning round ailing ex-state-owned mills round the world. His father, Mohan, had moved to the city after Partition and built up a steel operation. After working in the family business, Mittal moved to Indonesia in 1976 and later in 1995, he separated his own steel operation from the family's Indian businesses, and went his own way.

Mittal settled in London, where he loves to live, although he retains his Indian passport. His family stake in the company is now worth £7.877 billion. Mittal has a £9m pile in London's exclusive Bishop's Avenue, he also set a world record for a private home when he paid a reputed £70m to Bernie Ecclestone for a house in Kensington Palace Gardens. In all with past dividends, and a multi-billion investment portfolio, we reckon that the Mittal family is now worth perhaps £11.8 billion.

4. Roman Abramovich £10.3bn - Chelsea (Last year £7.4bn, 4th)

History is dead to Roman Abramovich. Carlo Ancelotti did the league-and-cup Double for Chelsea in 2010 and within 12 months was sacked in a corridor. His successor Andres Villas-Boas needs to triumph quickly and repeatedly, specifically in the Champions League; in the heretofore fruitless pursuit of winning Europe's biggest club competition, Abramovich has dispensed with managers Ancelotti, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Avram Grant, Jose Mourinho and Claudio Ranieri – and close to £1 billion all told, with losses at the club rising to £77.8 m in 2009-10. Helpfully, Abramovich wrote off £340m of club debt to him in January 2010 and effectively turned a £709m loan into equity.

It's eight years since Abramovich bought Chelsea for £140m but his background was far from privileged. Born in a bleak industrial town just south of the Arctic Circle, he was orphaned at three and raised by his uncle. Moving to Moscow at 14, he did his army service and then started his own business, first making cheap plastic products, later graduating to tyres. Shrewdly he moved into the burgeoning oil industry, buying Sibneft with tycoon Boris Berezovsky in 1995 for around £120m. Abramovich then bought the exiled Berezovsky's shares in Sibneft, which was sold to the Russian natural gas monopoly Gazprom in October 2005; the stake held by Abramovich and some minor partners was worth around £7.5 billion, with a further £280m dividend paid in June 2006 to former owners.

Huge dividends over the years from Sibneft and sales of stakes in his other operations added another £2 billion. In recent times, Abramovich has diversified his portfolio by taking a stake in the Russian steel group Evraz and mining group Highland Gold. Abramovich and his partners have stakes in the two now worth £1812m, up sharply on the year. Even after a costly divorce from his former wife Irina, Abramovich has a string of property, art and yachting assets world-wide. With the hefty Chelsea spending, we clip him back by £300m from the £10,600m figure in Finans magazine's 2011 Russian rich list.

5. The Liebherr Family £3bn - Southampton (Last year £3bn, 5th)

Few would have enjoyed Southampton's recent successes more than Markus Liebherr (pictured). The industrialist died of a heart attack in August 2010, just 13 months after agreeing a deal to buy the then struggling Saints within two hours of arriving at the St Mary's ground. No terms were disclosed but the club came out of administration and Liebherr claimed the deal was "ein Schnappchen" (a bargain).

Scion of the Liebherr family, whose self-named industrial group has expanded over the decades from tower cranes into all manner of machinery, Markus inherited a fifth of the family fortune when his father died in 1993 – but gave his shares back and developed his own business group Mali International. The whole Liebherr fortune is reckoned to be worth £3 billion.

His family have pledged to continue his good work at Southampton. Generously funded, the Saints had finished 2009/10 in a disappointing seventh place in League One, but were promoted the following season; they have started 2011/2012 strongly despite the sale of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Arsenal for £12m – a fee which took Southampton's income from the transfer of academy players like Wayne Bridge, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale to more than £40m since the turn of the century.

6. Joe Lewis £2.8bn - Tottenham Hotspur (Last year £2.7bn, 6th)

Eye-catching adventures in Europe are nothing new to Joe Lewis, Spurs' ultimate owner with a £117m stake. Having made his early fortune in foreign-exchange dealing (and relocated to the Bahamas in the 1970s), he made a packet when Britain left the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992. He recycles the forex profits into his Tavistock Group with interests in 175 companies in areas including property, financial services, life sciences, energy, industry and consumer goods. It also has significant holdings in Russian oil and gas. Among Lewis's property holdings are 3,600 acres in the Bahamas, 8,000 acres in Florida and a 50,000-acre ranch in Argentina – so it must have been particularly annoying when Spurs missed out on the prime real estate of London's new Olympic Stadium, which has been promised instead to West Ham United.

Lewis has had his bad times – in March 2008 he lost nearly £500m on his investment in failed Wall Street bank Bear Stearns – but that hardly dented the Lewis fortune: the share purchases were not made with borrowed money but came straight from Lewis's deep pockets. He also has a £250m stake in the pubs group, Mitchells & Butler, and is trying to gain control of the company. He's helped by sales of business assets well before the Bear Sterns collapse – such as the CovX pharmaceuticals company to Pfizer – and continued huge annual profits on foreign exchange deals. Safe to say he won't need to go InterRailing round Europe any time soon.

7. Denis O'Brien £2.517bn - Celtic (Last year £1.87bn, 7th)

Although no longer a director of Doncaster Rovers since the Yorkshire club was reorganised under the company name Patienceform (see entries 24, 59 and 82), Irish entrepreneur Denis O'Brien now has a 2.82% stake in Celtic.

Obviously, football hasn't made him rich: that would be his wise moves in the telecoms industry. He started by winning a local radio licence in 1989 for Dublin; two years later he established Esat Telecom, which became the first company to compete against former state-owned telephone company Eircom.

He also established Esat Digifone and won Ireland's second GSM license, to compete against the then state-owned telephone company's mobile section, Eircell. In 2000 O'Brien sold Esat Telecom to BT for $2.9 billion, collecting £175m for his stake. He then launched Digicel, a Caribbean-based mobile company now worth £1.6 billion after debt. That dwarfs his £1m stake in Celtic, as do other assets including the £36m Quinta do Largo golf resort in Portugal and a 21.6% stake in Irish News & Media.

8. Stanley Kroenke £1.8bn - Arsenal (Last year £1.85bn, 8th)

It can't be easy to be seen as the lesser of two evils, but a good businessman will welcome whatever opens doors for him. Although Arsenal hadn't invited the interest in a full takeover bid, Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov had been independently gathering minority shares as they jostled for position; the board preferred the American's advances, and the late Danny Fiszman and Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith sold their shares to Kroenke, whose 66% stake is worth around £530m.

Born in Columbia, Missouri – where he still resides – Enos Stanley Kroenke married one of the US's richest women. With her sister Nancy, Ann Walton inherited stock from her father James, who (with his brother Sam) founded WalMart – now the world's biggest supermarket group. Kroenke built his own fortune developing commercial and retail properties, many not far from WalMart stores.

A sports nut, he owns pro basketball's Denver Nuggets and hockey's Colorado Avalanche; both play at his Pepsi Center. He also owns a stake in pro football's St. Louis Rams. His assets also include five ranches covering 1.5m acres, shopping centres and office properties. Forbes' 2011 list of America's richest pegs him at £1.6 billion, but we raise him to £1.8 billion.

9. Malcolm Glazer & family £1.64bn - Manchester United (Last year £1.53bn, 9th)

The Glazers will never win any popularity contests among Manchester United fans. Having come under fire after borrowing heavily to take the club into private ownership, they were then criticised for considering a £600m flotation on the Singapore stock exchange. That idea was put on hold due to stock market volatility but the club's bottom line looks healthy: in the year to June 2011 turnover rose 15.7% to £331.4m, while operating profits reached an all-time high of £110.8m due to commercial revenues smashing through the £100m barrier for the first time thanks to a string of lucrative sponsorship deals. The accounts for Red Football, the club’s parent company, also showed its net debt fell from £377m to £308m.

Whatever the figures – helped along the way, fans argue, by rising ticket prices – the Glazers remain the most hated owners in British football. Patriarch Malcolm Glazer, who inherited his father's jewellery busienss, also owns NFL franchise the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; other assets include investments in food, marine protein, broadcasting, health care, property, banking, natural gas, oil and the internet. Whatever dividends he reaps, they don't include the love of the Red Devils faithful.

10. Mike Ashley £1.37bn - Newcastle United (Last year £950m, 16th)

You can get a passable football outfit at Sports Direct for very little outlay; it's tempting to say the retailer's founder Mike Ashley is managing the same trick at Newcastle United, who have started the Premier League season strongly despite selling their four best players during 2011.

Ashley's relationship with Magpies fans is best described as volatile. Having gradually bought the club whole over summer 2007 he was initially welcomed as a hero, swigging lager with the lads while wearing the famous black and white stripes and replacing the unpopular manager Sam Allardyce with local legend Kevin Keegan in January 2008. But Keegan resigned that September over transfer policy and the fans turned against the board, leading to Ashley offering to sell the club. He still hasn't found a buyer at the right price, having paid £134m and put in £258m all told, although fans are more likely to quote the £35m the club received in January for star striker Andy Carroll, who still hasn't been replaced.

Money is not an issue for Ashley, especially compared to the privacy he has protected so fanatically before his sudden appearance under the floodlights. Once described as Britain's Howard Hughes, Buckinghamshire-born Ashley is thought to live in seclusion in Hertfordshire. What we do know is that the former squash coach opened a small chain of sports shops which he built into Sports Direct, now the UK's largest sportswear retailer, partly by taking his chances to buy brands like Donnay, Dunlop Slazenger, Kangol, Karrimor and Lonsdale. In February 2007 Sports Direct floated for £2.2bn, pocketing £929m in one day for Ashley, who retained control; shares dropped sharply but are recovering and the company is now worth nearly £1.3 billion with Ashley sitting on a £916m stake. His Newcastle United holding, past property deals, dividends, salaries and cash take him sailing into the billionaires' club.

Newcastle midfielder out until New Year

Newcastle could be without midfielder Yohan Cabaye until January as he requires surgery on his injured groin.

The France international limped out of the Magpies' 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on November 11.

Manager Alan Pardew has confirmed the 26-year-old will miss Thursday's Europa League clash with Maritimo and will undergo surgery in the next week.

"He will definitely have an operation, and we think it's going to be on Friday or Monday, I'm not sure," said Pardew.

"That's a blow to us because he's a top player."

The French Football Federation had released a statement on Tuesday denying they were to blame for Cabaye's injury.

Cabaye linked up with France for last week's friendly against Italy, but the FFF said he 'did not train once' and 'did not play the slightest minute of the Italy-France match, which he followed from the bench, without wearing his match kit'.

Meanwhile, Pardew could also be without striker Shola Ameobi for Thursday's visit of Maritimo to St James' Park.

"The only one we are a little bit concerned about is Shola," he said.

"He's got a slight groin niggle, so we are going to have to see how he shapes up."

Cheick Tiote must improve discipline - Pardew

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has told midfielder Cheick Tiote he needs to improve his poor disciplinary record.

The Ivory Coast international was sent off in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday and he has received 29 bookings in 59 games since joining the club.

"It's not a laughing matter because he's one of our big players and I can't have him not playing," Pardew told BBC Newcastle.

"It could be costly and he needs to understand that."

Tiote's red card against Sunderland was the second sending off of his Newcastle career.

He will miss Newcastle's next three Premier League matches but is free to play for the club in the Europa League and will be involved against Club Brugge on Thursday.

Pardew has revealed that he reminds Tiote about his responsibilities before every match.

"I will be talking to him before the Brugge game," he added.

"We talk to him before every game. We talk to him at every half-time and I'll be talking to him again."

Last season the 26-year-old received more bookings than any other player and he has already picked up four yellow cards and a red in seven matches this season.

Pardew accepted the decision to dismiss Tiote for his tackle on Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher, but feels the game is losing its physical side.

"I do think that part of the game has changed," he continued.

"Where we are at the moment is that almost every mistimed tackle is a booking.

"There is going to be this type of challenge. Referees need to understand that it's a genuine attempt to get the ball and nothing more. That's why we devised this award for a free-kick. It's not always a yellow card.

"So the sanitisation of the game is a little bit worrying for me because I like the physical side. I think we all do as supporters."

Newcastle in new Debuchy move

Newcastle have made a fresh move in their bid to capture Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy.

Press Association Sport understands the Magpies have stepped up their protracted pursuit of the 27-year-old defender, having so far not managed to persuade the French club to part with him.

Manager Alan Pardew had made the right-back one of his main targets this summer and will hope the latest offer will trigger a positive response.

Debuchy, an international team-mate of Yohan Cabaye, has indicated his desire to follow the midfielder to Newcastle, but having seen Cabaye's value increase significantly since his £4.8million switch last summer, Lille are holding out for their valuation.

Reports in France have suggested they want eight million euros - around £6.3million - a figure way in excess of the Magpies' initial offer.

Pardew has been waiting patiently for a breakthrough with one of his major targets - FC Twente defender Douglas and Liverpool striker Andy Carroll are among those about whom enquiries have been made - while at the same time bolstering his development squad with the acquisitions of Roman Amalfitano, Gael Bigirimana and Curtis Good.

However, with the start of the new season fast-approaching and the challenge of Europa League football to be added into the mix, further strengthening to the senior set-up is also required.

Cabaye say Debuchy want to join us

Newcastle are expected to attempt to complete the signing of Mathieu Debuchy this week and Yohan Cabaye hopes the deal happens.

The Premier League outfit have been chasing the France full-back for the majority of the summer as Alan Pardew seeks to strengthen the right side of his defence.

And Cabaye is optimistic Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias can complete a deal for his team-mate from Euro 2012, and good friend from their time together atLille.

"Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille but he has made the decision," Cabaye toldThe Journal while on Newcastle's pre-season tour in Portugal.

"I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek (Llambias) and Mike Ashley will do the business now."Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal.

"He wants to play for Newcastle and I hope that he comes to Newcastle because, of course, he is my friend but also a very good player for Newcastle."

Newcastle defeated Braga over the weekend as Pardew's men continued preparations for the new season, when they will seek to improve on 2011/12's impressive fifth-placed finish.

And Cabaye is pleased with the pre-season progress: "It is very nice to be back with Newcastle. I have had four weeks of holidays but now I am glad to be back.

"I am delighted to be back to build my fitness for the start of the Premier League season because it is going to be an exciting season for us.

"It was tough against Braga for the first five minutes because it is a long time to be away but after that it felt good and I felt like I was ready.

"I am looking forward to the next few weeks now."

Ba committed to Newcastle

Newcastle United striker Demba Ba has insisted he is keen to remain at Tyneside with just four days to go before the release-clause in his contract expires.

Speculation has been rife that the 27-year-old Senegal international could be used to help broker a deal to bring Liverpool's Andy Carroll back to the north-east.

But Ba insisted he wants to play for the Premier League side next season. "I don't care what is being said. I think it's part of the game," Ba told the Journal from Newcastle's training base in Portugal. "However, I have never said anything other than I love being at Newcastle. If they hear something from me about my future, that is the truth. Otherwise, everything that is said is not true.

"The newspapers and I are not very friendly at the moment. For months and months and months, people have been talking about me, but there is nothing happening. Of course, I am looking forward to next season with Newcastle. We just have to build on the progress we made last season. For me, I just can't wait to start the first game."

Ba arrived at St James' Park on a free transfer from West Ham United last summer and scored 15 goals before heading on African Nations Cup duty. He got just one more on his return after being asked to assume a different role following the January signing of compatriot Papiss Cisse, who scored 13 goals to help the Magpies' surge into the top five.

Tiote reiterates Toon commitment

Cheik Tiote has reiterated his commitment to Newcastle United, stressing he is "very happy" at the club.

Tiote, 26, has impressed for Newcastle since joining the club from FC Twente in 2010 for £3.5 million.

His form has led to speculation linking him with a move away from St James' Park, with Manchester United and Chelsea both said to be interested.

But the Ivory Coast international has told the Evening Chronicle: "I am still a Newcastle player. I am very happy here.

"All I am looking at is that the season ahead of us will be a really good one, just like last season. Last season we finished fifth and doing that again will be difficult."

Of the campaign ahead, which will see the Magpies compete in the Europa League, he added "I am ready for the challenge with Newcastle. It's a new season, and I think we have a lot of things to do.

"We will be playing in two competitions and it's going to be difficult."

Newcastle make loan approach for Carroll

Newcastle have approached Liverpool regarding a season-long loan move for Andy Carroll, according to reports.

Carroll has become one of the most sought-after properties of the summer after Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers revealed he would consider allowing the England forward to leave the Anfield club.

It is understood Rodgers would prefer a straight sale of Carroll, while the player remains keen to prove himself on Merseyside. If Carroll does not fit into Rodgers' plans for next season, the striker will accept a loan switch, with a view to showing Liverpool what they are missing.

Reports on Sunday claim Newcastle have made the first formal move for the £35 million striker, whom they sold in January 2011. The approach is for a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move.

Carroll, who scored 31 league goals during his time at St James' Park, continues to hold the club in high regard, despite the high level of abuse he received when returning as a Liverpool player last season.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew recently refrained from comment on the future of Carroll, preferring only to praise what he still regards as a "top player".

"He did a terrific job here," Pardew said on Wednesday. "I've always supported him even at Liverpool when other people haven't. I think he's had a raw deal from the media if I'm honest.

"He's going to be a great player, but where he treads the boards, we'll have to wait and see."

AC Milan, West Ham and Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in Carroll's services.

Coloccini: Newcastle will compete for UCL football again

Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini said his side can repeat last season's success and enjoy another strong showing in the Premier League.

The Magpies surprised many by finishing in fifth place last term, qualifying for the Europa League, and the Argentine is confident that they can repeat their heroics in the upcoming campaign.

Coloccini told The Sun: "I'm not interested what the critics think - we are no one-season wonders.

"I accept the Premier League is becoming far more competitive and challenging at the top end of the table, but we are confident that more success lies ahead. Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs in England and therefore we should be challenging for major honours.

"We don't feel under any more pressure because of what we achieved last season. If anything, we are relishing the season ahead. Our success has brought with it greater confidence and more determination to do better.

"Last season we more than demonstrated we are a side that can challenge the bigger teams. Up to the last day of the season we were challenging for Champions League football.

"It wasn't achieved by chance, either. Over the season we showed great consistency and our goal this season is to better that success.

"I don't expect things to change. The likes of Manchester City, Man United, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and ourselves will be fighting for the four available Champions League places.

"I'd expect the club to strengthen the squad as well so, with some new players coming in and the current confidence that exists throughout the club, why shouldn't we be optimistic?"

Coloccini has also praised manager Alan Pardew for his impact on the club, stating that he was one of the key factors behind their success.

"He is a fantastic coach and a major influence and driving force behind the success," the centre-back enthused.

"From the first day of last season's campaign he installed trust and confidence in the players.

"He felt we were more than capable of challenging the top teams and, when people were expecting us to fall away, we just kept getting stronger and stronger.

"There was no coincidence or luck that we finished so high up in the table - the players thought we would. The only disappointment was that we didn't finish higher."

Newcastle will kick off their 2012-13 league campaign against Tottenham on August 18.

Ba slams exit talk 'rubbish'

Demba Ba has reiterated his committment to Newcastle United after a summer of speculation over his future.

Ba came off the bench in last night’s 1-0 friendly defeat to German club Chemnitzer.

The striker has a well-publicised £7million buy-out clause in his contract.

And the 26-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Galatasaray last month.

However, Ba moved to end talk of a move away from St James’s Park after the game, decided by a first-half goal from Anton Fink.

“The fans see me on the pitch - that’s my message to them,” Ba said. “In the papers there’s been a lot of rubbish!

“Like I said I said on Twitter, it’s just rumours.

“People talk, but what I can say is that none of the teams that have been talked about have approached me. I’m still a Newcastle player, and I enjoy putting on a black and white shirt.”

Ba emerged from the tunnel last night with a broad grin on his face, and he has also told his team-mates he is happy at the club.

“Life is brilliant - I always have a smile on my face,” Ba went on.

“That’s how I am. Football is my job, but it’s also a lot of fun for me. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t do it.”

Pardew’s side are back in action on Monday night when they face Monaco in Landsberg.

Elliot expects battle with Krul

Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot knows he faces a major challenge to oust Holland international Tim Krul next season.

The 25-year-old arrived on Tyneside from Charlton in August last year to share the responsibility of playing understudy to the Dutchman with veteran Steve Harper, and ended the campaign very much as Alan Pardew's number two despite having made just one senior appearance.

It is a role he is likely to reprise when the new campaign gets under way, with Harper now 37 and Fraser Forster seemingly destined for a permanent switch to Celtic.

However, he is only too aware that Krul's recent form means he will have to remain patient once again.

Elliot told the Evening Chronicle: "Tim was fantastic last season - probably one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, if not the best.

"If Tim does really well, you can just hold your hands up and say fair play to him.

"You can't expect to play when the keeper is doing so well, only if the opportunity comes where he's injured or form dips.

"If he keeps playing well and doesn't get injured, there's not much you can do. You have just got to be patient and keep working hard in training. There's only one position and Tim did fantastically well. You have just got to hold your hands up and say well done."

Luuk de Jong in Newcastle link

EPSN are reporting this afternoon that FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong would cost ‘absurd money’ following interest from Newcastle United.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is keen to add another striker to his ranks and after the successful purchase of Papiss Cisse in January, the club are backing him all the way.

It had even been suggested that Newcastle and Twente were in negotiations over the transfer of de Jong, but this has been dismissed by Twente manager Steve McClaren.

The former England manager said: “Nobody has to leave. Only an absurd bid would see Luuk leave.”

This could be an attempt to get more money from Newcastle or it could be that Twente are desperate not to sell one of their star men.

The 21-year-old scored 32 goals last season, so you can certainly see why Newcastle – and Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach are interested.

One of the most highly rated youngsters in Holland, demand for his signature is set to be significant and if Twente are to sell, they want a fair price.

In the end it could come down to the demands of the player. Does he want a move to England, Germany or to remain in Holland with Twente?

The next few weeks are certainly crucial for the development of this story. Newcastle may have to be patient in pursuit of the striker.

Cabaye excited by Europa League football at Newcastle

Newcastle star Yohan Cabaye has admitted he can’t wait to get the club’s Europa League campaign underway.

The French playmaker was a key member of the Toon team who impressed and finished the season in fifth position, narrowly missing out on a place in the top four.

And Cabaye, who starred for his nation at Euro 2012, believes that testing themselves against some of Europe’s best teams will be great for the club and its supporters.

"Playing in Europe next season is massive for the Club and massive for the players as it shows progression," he told Newcastle’s official website.

"We have to play in these sort of competitions for the experience. It can only be a good thing for us as a squad.

"And the fans will love it too. I can't wait for a European night in our stadium - it will be great.

"It will be really important to play well in this competition and I'm sure we can do well."

Newcastle United Wade Into Mathieu Debuchy Battle with €5M Bid

Newcastle United have made their move in the battle for Lille’s highly-rated full back Mathieu Debuchy.

According to French radio station RMC, Lille have received a bid of €5M for Debuchy from the English Premier League outfit.

However, the sum has quickly been deemed as €3M too little by Rudi Garcia’s men, who are under no financial pressure to sell the 26-year-old for less than they believe he is worth.

Indeed, the €40M which has flowed into Lille’s coffers from selling Eden Hazard to Chelsea has ensured that Garcia is in a strong position.

Debuchy, who is currently with Laurent Blanc’s France squad at Euro 2012, is a man in demand.

Another English side, Chelsea, are also believed to be seriously interested in the defender, and an offer of €7M from the Champions League winners has been mooted.

Newcastle meanwhile have mined the French market to spectacular effect over the last 12 months and snaring Debuchy would be yet another coup – they will have to raise their bid though to secure his signature.

Debuchy made 32 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring an impressive five goals from his defensive role.
