Gary Neville: "More to come" from Wayne Rooney

Former Manchester United skipper Gary Neville has said Wayne Rooney must "improve" and "adapt" if he is to enjoy a career into his thirties at Old Trafford.

Rooney has been playing professional football for 10 years despite being just 26, and England coach Neville thinks there is more to come from the former Everton man.

"At the age of 26 you always have to think that there's more to come," Neville told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We need to see Wayne Rooney improve and he needs to see himself improve.

"Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have adapted their games,"

"Ryan Giggs has gone from a flying left winger to someone who now plays off the front at inside left as well as central midfield.

"Paul Scholes was a goalscoring number 10 player when he first started as a 16-year-old, now he's a holding midfield player who controls the game.

"You have to adapt. Rooney is still a centre forward, but he'll adapt over the next 10 years to become someone who's thought of in that same way as those two players."

Neville to avoid hot seat

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville says he has no intention of becoming a manager.

Neville, who retired from professional football in January 2011, was a surprise appointment to England manager Roy Hodgson's backroom staff for Euro 2012 after establishing himself as a television pundit.

Many of Neville's former team-mates at Manchester United have gone on to become club managers, but the former England international has dismissed the idea of following their lead.

"I have no aspiration to be a football manager. I want to do what I am doing and make as big an impact as I can," he told the Daily Mail, referring to his role as a coach.

"I really enjoyed it (Euro 2012). Who would not enjoy being part of a tournament? It was an incredible experience for me.

"But I am acutely aware it is only the very beginning. I am ambitious and young and I want to learn more."

Neville will continue his television work when the new English Premier League season begins, and will also serve as an assistant to Hodgson when England meet Italy in a friendly on August 15.

Neville joins England coaching staff

England manager Roy Hodgson has appointed former Manchester United defender Gary Neville to his coaching staff.

Neville, who has been working as a television commentator since his retirement towards the end of last season, has signed a four-year contract with the FA.

The 37-year-old will join up with fellow coaches Ray Lewington, Ray Clemence and Dave Watson in time for Euro 2012.

Hodgson told the FA's official website: "Gary has achieved so much in the game as a player with Manchester United and England.

"He has obtained UEFA coaching qualifications and will be tremendously respected by the players because of his vast experience as a player.

"At my first meeting with The FA, I explained that Gary was someone I wanted as part of my staff. I think it is very important we have a younger coach who knows the dressing room and is very experienced at international level.

"That he has represented England as a player at five major finals tournaments will make him an invaluable member of staff."

Neville said: "Roy asking me to be a part of his staff and to work with the national team is not only an honour but a very special moment for me.

"I had absolutely no hesitation in accepting this role and I am relishing the opportunity to work alongside Roy and the team at the Euros and through to the next two tournaments."

Neville is England's most capped right-back with 85 appearances and won a host of titles during his time with United.
