Until August 28 of this year, Terri Patraw was the highly successful women's soccer coach at University of Nevada-Reno. In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, she asserts that she was fired from her position, which she had held since 2004, because she reported NCAA and Title IX violations to university officials. Sexual harassment, as-yet unspecified by the press, is also at issue.
Patraw alleges that she pressed the athletic department for equal access to locker room facilities for her players. She also reported that the head men's golf coach was arranging payment for male and female golfers, which violate NCAA rules. Patraw argues that these incidents are the only explanation for why she was fired in August, just weeks after signing a two and half year contract extension and after leading her team to two record-breaking seasons.
She has also filed an administrative whistleblower complaint with the state personnel board, which will hold a hearing in January. Patraw is seeking reinstatement as well as damages.
