Student Loan 101- How to Avoid Repaying for Life

Student Loan 101- How to Avoid Repaying for Life

Going back to school and getting an education is a welcome investment in anyone’s future. What happens, though, when you can’t afford that education and you need to get a student loan? The first step is to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and financial aid information at the school you’re going to. Then, you can take advantage of grants and scholarships that are available to you. After all that, if you still need money for your education then you can look to the ever-popular student loan.

Student loans are a great asset to have when it comes to financing an education, but let me help you figure out how to NOT spend the rest of your life paying them back. With most student loans, you don’t have to worry about repayment until after you graduate or if you quit school without graduating. This is a great bonus, but if you’ve got a part-time or full-time job during school, take the initiative to pay on your loans while you’re getting your degree. There are many payment plans that you can set up, allowing you to make the situation work for you. If you can’t do this, don’t sweat it, because I’ve got more tips for getting rid of a student loan faster.

With these loans, payments are substantially small in most cases. If you were to borrow $5,000 in loans, you might have minimum payments of $50-$100 a month. If you are utilizing your education and have gotten a good career, pay more. Even if you pay an extra $25 or $50 a month, that will cut down the length of repayment significantly. Don’t forget about interest, either. Even though it’s generally a low percentage, it’s still there. At first, like any standard loan, you’ll be paying off the interest with your initial payments. Any extra money you send, though, will go straight to the principal of the loan, and every little bit helps.

Some people have much bigger student loans, but the same principles still apply. Pay more than the minimum when you can, and you’ll be free of your student loan debt much quicker than those who just pay the minimum every month. With that said, the ball is now in your court. I hope that you use these tips to get out of student loan debt much faster and get on with your life.
